| Users Tasks Web part error with multiple Assigned to value |
|
|
I have a question or problem description. The web part is working well, but when i change the type of Assigned to field in the task list to have multiple values, not only one user, the user tasks web part shows the error: wrong field type for gropuing or sorting (even if the field is not used in grouping nor sorting, only in columns). After deleting the Assigned to field in colums property, users tasks shows everything ok.
Is there a problem using the web part together with multiple assigned to users?
Looking forward to your answer.

Karel,
Generally, the message "A Group By or Sort column is invalid due to a retrieved List item with an altered default data type." implies that the web part has encountered a List field that is no longer of a default data type. The SharePoint cross-site querying API has some issues with the same internal column name having different data types across multiple Lists.
However, let me take a look and reproduce the issue first to make sure that is what is happening in this case. I may be able to come up with a work around that will work in this situation.

Karel,
I was able to confirm that changes in the Assigned To option Allow multiple selections: from the default of No can generate this message when at least 1 other Task list in the query is not using the same option value. This is a known limitation of the SharePoint SPSiteDataQuery class, which is what the web part is using to query across a Site Collection. The web part is actually masking the actual SQL Server collation error when the same column name has multiple data types across Lists.
While I cannot fully mask this issue when the web part is using the Assigned To field in grouping and sorting, I was able to code a work around when the Assigned To column has been chosen for display in the grid. This issue was also masking another problem I was able to correct when multiple users and/or groups were entered into the Assigned To field. I have some additional testing to complete, but I should have a new build posted on the web site for download sometime Thursday the 25th.
Thank you for taking the time to bring this issue to my attention.

Karel,
I have posted the maintenance release 2010.1.02 of the User Tasks Web Part that provides a work around for the SQL Server collation problem when the Assigned To has different configurations across Task lists in a cross-site query. Please note that this "fix" will generally allow the Assigned To column to be used as a display column in the grid regardless of Task list configurations across a Site Collection. However, the web part still does not fully support the use of the column under specific circumstances that are not supported by SharePoint.
I am working to update the User Guide with the specifics of when and how the Assigned To can be used in Sort or Group By scenarios.

Bruce,
thank you for the 2010.1.02 build. The webpart is now able to show multiple assigned to values, but there are another 2 issues i found.
First one - if the task list has multiple assigned to users allowed, the web part shows number 1 in the first row as assigned to and then the user (or users) in the grid - why is there the number 1? This number does not depend on the count of users in Assigned to field (1 or more). I can send you the screenshot by the mail (not sure if i can attach jpeg to the post here).
Second issue - using the User category. When the User category is blank, the web part shows all my own tasks including those where i am in muliple assigned to value. When the User category has alternative user name (to show onother user's tasks), the web part ignores completely the user tasks list with multiple assigned to values allowed (even if there is only one user written).
Thank you for your help.
Kind regards
Karel.

Karel,
I just want to make sure I understand your first question correctly. In the first screenshot below, the second task in the grid has multiple user and group assignments. Using this task as an example...in your case the first user assignment Dishongh, Bruce would be replaced with the number 1 instead (as in the second screenshot), but the remaining user/groups assignments display the correct User or Group?
Good screenshot example:
Did I describe your first issue correctly?
With respect to your second question, I will need to will run some tests to see if I can duplicate your example. Keep in mind that regardless of which user name has been selected, the currently logged in user must have at least the read right to that users Tasks in order for them to be displayed in the web part.

Hi Bruce,
thank you for your quick reply.
To the first issue: our user tasks web part looks like the second picture with the number 1, but this number is not instead of any user. There is number 1 + all the users assigned to this task. Sending you the screenshot via mail.
To the second one: the user has the right to view all the tasks of another users. This issue happens to all users - designers, admins and classic users too. Thank you in advance for your help, i respect that it will take some time to test it.
Kind regards.
Karel

Karel,
Thank you for the screen-shot you sent me, it turned out to be just what I needed. I was able to reproduce this issue, I dropped you a quick email message about how to produce/hide the problem, and it has been corrected. Additionally, I also investigated and was able to reproduce the second issue with the User category as well.
Thank you for pointing out both of these problems. I am still testing, but should have a new build later this evening that will address both of these issues.
